Splitwise Alternatives for Your Japan Trip (2026): An Honest Comparison

If you're reading this, one of two things happened. Either Splitwise stopped you mid-trip with "you've reached your daily limit of free expenses," or you're planning a Japan trip and heard that might happen. Both are good reasons to look around.

What happened to Splitwise?

Splitwise is still the best-known expense splitter, and its core design remains good. But since its acquisition, the free tier has been squeezed hard: free users are limited to a handful of expense entries per day, and currency conversion — essential the moment you're spending yen — sits behind the Pro subscription. Reviewers describe entering a day's expenses at the hotel each night and hitting the cap after three or four entries. The result shows in public ratings: recent app-store reviews are dominated by paywall complaints, and its Trustpilot score sits below 2 stars.

None of that makes Splitwise unusable. If your whole group already pays for Pro, it works fine in Japan. The problem is the phrase whole group — everyone needs the app, an account, and ideally the subscription. On a one-off trip with friends, that's a hard sell.

What a Japan trip specifically demands

Japan stresses expense apps in ways a domestic weekend doesn't:

One person pays, constantly. Many izakaya and small restaurants won't split a bill ("betsu-betsu") when busy — here's why — so someone covers the table and you settle later. Your tool must make "A paid for everyone" effortless.
Multi-currency by default. Expenses happen in yen; your group thinks in dollars, euros, or pounds. You need conversion that's free, automatic, and consistent — arguments about "which day's exchange rate" are a real way group trips go sour.
Offline moments. Subway tunnels, rural trains, and dead zones mean the app must accept entries without a connection.
Mixed payment methods. Cash, credit cards, and IC cards (Suica) interleave all day. The record is what matters, not the payment rail.

Where we're genuinely different

SplitJapan was built for exactly one scenario: a group trip to Japan. That focus buys three things the general-purpose apps don't offer:

Nobody installs anything. The organizer opens a web page; everyone else taps a shared link. No accounts, no app store, no "can you all download this before dinner."
Rates are locked when you add the expense. Each yen amount is converted at entry time and frozen, so nobody relitigates the exchange rate at settlement. Balances show in each traveler's own home currency.
Japan-specific extras. A tax-free tag tracks the refund you'll claim at the airport under the new system that starts November 1, 2026 (full guide here), and the whole flow assumes the "one person paid for the table" reality of Japanese restaurants.

And the honest trade-off: SplitJapan is new and deliberately minimal. There's no receipt scanning, no payment processing, no real-time multi-editor sync — the organizer keeps the record and shares the latest link. For a two-week trip with friends, we think that's the right amount of tool. If you want deep features and your group will all subscribe, Splitwise Pro remains a fine choice.
